The sister city of Pompeii was also buried under the lava and mud from Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD. Excavations began in the 18th century and revealed Roman houses built around a rectangular plan, with baths, a gymnasium, a shop lined with shelves, a group of stag sculptures and some spectacular mosaics.
