Frescoes
During Hotel Caruso's restoration, frescoes dating back to the 18th century were discovered: they depict flowers, birds and butterflies around Arcadian landscapes. Of particular interest is the ceiling in the hall, which has a pair of griffins facing each other-probably the earliest paintings in the town.
The restoration work was carried out by Professor Antonio Forcellino of the Central Institute of Restoration in Rome, who previously worked as Chief Restorer of Michelangelo's Moses.
The Cappellina
Most aristocratic palaces of the 16th century had a small private chapel in which the family could say daily prayers. The chapel of Hotel Caruso has a stone altar in baroque style, painted in tempera and decorated with a stucco relief. Both sides of the chapel above the altar have stucco relief carvings, with images of saints at prayer.
The Entrance
It is believed that the portal may once have belonged to the church of Saint Eustachio in Pontone, dating from the second half of the 12th century. The lower half of the portal incorporates the crossbeams of the original, complete with a pair of lions that symbolically guard access to a holy place. The upper part of the portal is composed of the dismantled arch of a pulpit, broken in the middle and reused.
The Wonder of Marble
Visitors to Ravello will marvel at the pillars, columns, pedestals, capitals and sarcophagi which embellish churches, hotels, private houses and corners of buildings all over the town. The ancient Republic of Amalfi shipped wood from its extensive forests to Arab countries, and the ships returned with marble taken from abandoned Greek and Roman archaeological sites.
Ceramics
Most important of the area’s handicrafts is undoubtedly its ceramic production, so typical of the Amalfi Coast. Amphorae, vases, medallions, trays and decorative panels depict subjects of every kind, including mythical characters, folklore motifs, Arabian-style decorations and geometric patterns. Though an ancient tradition, it also suits contemporary designs, and today’s artists are constantly searching for innovative techniques and ideas.
Coral
Ravello is a land of ancient handicrafts. The Camo Coral Museum has a marvellous collection of coral pieces, cameos, engraved mother-of-pearl and shells, dating from Roman times right up to the last century. Coral is still worked today by artisans who, following ancient and traditional techniques, produce splendid and intricate works of art. | | |
